On hearing of the decline in the population of capercaillie in Britain…<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If the capercaillie cannot caper,<\/p>\n

the red deer rut or wild cat snarl,<\/p>\n

if there’s no beaver’s beavering this way,<\/p>\n

or howling wolves hunting in a pack,<\/p>\n

if the weasel’s easily extinguished,<\/p>\n

and the stoats are totally gone,<\/p>\n

if red\u2019s in their sanctuaries have been silenced<\/p>\n

and moles no longer underground,<\/p>\n

if hedgehogs cannot snaffle at their caf\u00e9s<\/p>\n

and pine martens no longer pine,<\/p>\n

if water voles holes have been deserted<\/p>\n

and seals no longer sing mourning songs,<\/p>\n

when the patter of ptarmigan feet becomes a silent beat<\/p>\n

and dormice slumber deep for evermore,<\/p>\n

then we are done.<\/p>\n

If there’s no life in the wild,<\/p>\n

it’s all just empty.<\/p>\n
